The Kenya Project

Mounthawk twinning with school in Nairobi, Kenya

The Kenya Project’ was an idea born in the minds of our very enthusiastic teacher, Mr Séan Coffey. The idea began to grow and develop and the school soon realised the full potential of the project. Now, as the school year draws to an end, a plan has been envisaged, goals and targets are beginning to be set and excitement is mounting.
Mounthawk is working closely in conjunction with Fr Kevin Sullivan, Chaplain of I.TT. Fr. Kevin has visited Nairobi on several occasions. As a result, he plays an instrumental role in the smooth running of this project, as his advice and knowledge of the area has been invaluable.
The aim of ‘The Kenya Project’ is, first and foremost, to raise awareness within the school community and the larger community of the vast difference between our lives in Kerry and the developing world.
We have been involved in a series of fundraising events. We have had
tremendous support from the school, parents, local businesses and the
local community. Our target of raising €15,000 has been surpassed – it
now stands at €34,000 - thanks to the overwhelming support and
generosity of our local area.
In July, 2 teachers and 6 students will spend two weeks in Kenya.
During their stay they will visit the school and will experience
integration with the local community, visiting homes and attending
Masses. A cheque for €15,000 has already been sent to the school.
Sincere thanks to Mr Seán Coffey who initiated the whole project.
Thanks also to everyone involved in the fund-raising and the planning
of the visit. Ms Pauline Burke and Mr Seán Geary will accompany Niamh
Fitzgerald, Caoimhe Garvey, Zoe Grattage, Cian Lynch, Aisling
O’Riordan and Martina Quirke to Kenya. It will, no doubt, be a lifechanging experience for them and we hope to maintain our link with
this school in Nairobi and establish the project as an annual event.
