1st Year
Curriculum
The Core Curriculum
All students study the full core curriculum.
- Irish.
- English.
- Maths.
- History.
- Geography
- Civic
Social and Political Education (C.S.P.E.)
- Social
Personal and Health Education (S.P.H.E)
- Religious
Education:
As a
Catholic school, religion imbues the whole ethos of the school and all
students who are registered as Catholic are required to take part in
both class and out of class religious activities. (Alternative arrangements
are made on an individial basis for students who are not registered
as Catholic)
- Physical
Education
- Science:
Though science is not part of the National Core Curriculum, all students
do Science in First Year in Mounthawk and are encouraged to keep on
one science subject to Leaving Cert.
- Language: all studnts study a continental language, either French, German or Spanish.

2nd
and 3rd year Curriculum
Core Curriculum
Irish is compulsory for all students who do not have an official exemption
granted by the Department of Education. Such exemptions will generally
have been processed in national school or in 1st year.

There is
an examination in this subject in the Junior Certificate.
As a norm, all students in Junior Cycle in Mounthawk take Religion
as an exam subject in Junior Cycle.

Optional Subjects
Of the 6 optional subjects chosen in first year,
students retain 4 subjects and drop 2 from the following list.
Modern Languages
Science.
Because science is desirable for so many courses
in third level, and because it divides into three subjects for the
Leaving Certificate, we recommend that students retain this subject
if at all possible.
Business Studies.
Business divides into three subjects for the
Leaving Certificate and should be retained by any student who is intent
on pursuing a business career.
