Mounthawk Senior Ladies football 2011

The Mounthawk senior girl’s football team began their season in style at the beginning of October in our home pitches with a huge victory against Castleisland Comprehensive School. Laura Rogers and Aine Daly were powerhouse at midfield running right through the away defence, giving Mounthawk qualification into the semi final of the championship. Here, we played a talented Pobalscoil Kenmare team who boasted several Kerry stars, but they were no match for our girls. Sarah Hayes played a blinder, scoring 6 well taken points from play and Mounthawk ran out eventual winners on a historic day in our schools football. Final score 3:18 to 4:6. All roads then led to Kilcummin on Monday 13th of November where we met a talented Rathmore team who had a number of cork u16 and minor stars. Mounthawk played an astounding first half with the aid of a very strong breeze and score a sufficient 2:18. Rathmore came back at us in the second half, their efforts proving futile and we ran out eventual winners. Donal Barry, Kerry Ladies chairperson presented the trophy to captain Deirdre Kearney. All roads now lead to Munster, and beyond! Onwards and Upwards! The girls would like to thank Mr Lyne for his hard work and dedication with us this year. The team consists of Laura Fitzgerald, Siobhan Breen, Sarah O’Carroll, Annie O’Dowd, Deirdre Kearney, Shauna Moriarty, Laura Rogers, Sharon Reidy, Karina Quilter, Aine Daly, Sarah Hayes, Aoife Fitzgerald, Una Nolan, McKenzie Keane, Nicola Horan, Shannon Carey, Rachel Browne.

Mounthawk Boys football 2011

The Gaelic footballers continue to build on the great work done last year with a number of major scalps this year including great wins against the Sem and Coláiste Na Sceilge. In the O’Sullivan Cup our Senior Footballers beat the South Kerry school on a scoreline of 5-10 to 1-11. The lads also narrowly lost out by a point to Tralee CBS on a score line of 11pts to 12. In the Munster Senior Cup our senior team are continuing their onslaught of Munster beating St. Colman’s of Shannon 4-13 to 1-8 in a very comprehensive win. Well done boys and special thanks to Mr Stack, Mr O’Shea and Mr Humphrey Moynihan.

The U17 footballers won three wins out of three in the Dunloe Cup. Our campaign started with a huge win over Tarbert Secondary School on a scoreline of 5-15 to 1-8. The lads then won in Killorglin against the ISK in an epic battle that went down to the wire. Then after the Midterm we beat footballing giants ‘The Sem’ to qualify for the Kerry semi-final. It was a huge team effort with some excellent performances from Joe Kelly, Gearóid Sheehan, Kevin Shanahan, Pádraig Kearney and Kieran Brick.

The U17s played Coláiste na Sceilge in the Dunloe Cup semi-Final in terrible conditions on Friday 18th November. The lads fought gallantly and were very unlucky to lose out by a few pts. Josh O’ Reilly in goals, Darragh Sheedy, Kevin Shanahan, Frank o Donnell and the indomitable Joe Kelly stood out in what was a very close game. Well done to Mr Murphy, Mr O’Regan and Mr Culloty. Beidh lá eile againn. The Munster U16 competition will start in the New Year and the future looks very bright for football in the school in 2012.

The U 15 Gaelic Footballers had two brilliant wins in Munster putting up huge scorelines. The boys played skilful, whole hearted football in all the games. MMK 7-17 Killaloe 2-6. MMK 5-17 Kilkee 1-3. Well done to Mr Costello and Mr Sugre.

The First years are currently playing games and there are some very talented footballers with great futures. They are coached by Mr Fell and the great Buddy O Grady.

Mercy Mounthawk 4-5 Rochestown 3-4

Mercy Mounthawk under-15 boys progressed to the Munster final this week with an excellent victory over Rochestown. Trailing by 7 points at half time and 6 points with 10 minutes to go, victory seemed out of grasp but with Daragh Carmody and Adam Kelly in spectacular form Mercy Mounthawk were able to come out on top.

Adam Kelly scored a tally of 3-1 from play with Daragh Cramody notching 1-2 and Ciarán Ó Connor scoring 0-2.
With conditions far from ideal, it took a spirited display from the backline to enusre victory with Donnchadh McGarry and Jared O Sullivan impressing. John Courtney gave a whole-hearted display in midfield, linking well with wing forward and Ardfert teammate Kevin Skinner.

Although it was undoubtedly a team victory and a fantastic team display, special mention must go to Adam kelly who once again proved just what a top player he is and what amazing potential he has. With Mercy Mounthawk staring in to the jaws of defeat he managed to score 3-1 which helped propel his team to victory.

Losing by 7points at half time could have buried most teams but coaches Ms. Kennelly and Mr. Costello rallied the troops and the team went out in the 2nd half with fire in their bellies, believeing they had what it took to win.

A key moment of the game came late in the 2nd half when, with Mounthawk down by 2points, Daragh Carmody pounced on an opportunity and scored the vital goal that finally gave Mounthawk the lead.

There were jubilant scenes aplenty at the final whistle as the Mounthawk boys sealed their path to only their 2nd ever Munster Final. There are high hopes that this could finally be the year that Munster Silverware returns to the school.
They face Mitchelstown CBS in the final in early December.
